How COVID-19 affected Millennials and Gen Zs in Australia in terms of freelancing
Lockdowns and reduced working hours for Australian Millennials and Gen Zs have forced many to seek income through online platforms such as Australia Freelance Market.
YouGov´s research found that Generation Z is leading the adoption of the "flexible economy" in Australia. According to the report, 42 per cent of Zoomers have already made money on freelance platforms and 28 per cent plan to do so in the future.
Zoe Piper, the youth employment expert from Australia, explained how the rise of flexible working and the pandemic have influenced a generation of workers who use freelancers to earn money.
"Put that in the COVID-context, where Gen Z were amongst the hardest hit during lockdowns, there is also a desire to take control of their finances and monetise their skills in other ways," Ms Piper said.
Additionally, jobs such as bicycle repairs, home office IT support and virtual fitness trainers also emerged as popular tasks on other freelancing platforms in Australia during the pandemic. Together with the usual tasks such as writing posts, data, IT and app design, these popular tasks offered many unemployed millennials and Generation Z a source of income.
